Marc Scott’s Voice Over Marketing Playbook

July 10, 2024 by Caryn Clark

Things you need to know.

1. I am ridiculously protective of my brand, and who I associate my brand and myself with.
2. When Marc Scott of VOpreneur ® asked for a testimonial about his Voice Over Marketing Playbook, I didn’t hesitate.
3. I have a marketing background, and yet, there are so many ideas, tips and know how in Playbook that I have found beyond useful.
4. Because I have more guidance and a plan, I’m totally jazzed to market every day. I even dream about it and what my plan of attack will be! I know, it’s weird and crazy, but true.
5. If you’re on the fence about Playbook, I get it. I was too. For years. Just read my review below. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Then buy it. (By the way, Marc only offers Playbook a couple of times a year.) https://www.vopreneur.com/a/2147532506/ap2Go2ih

Here is my review:

A few years ago, I had a free consult with Marc to discuss Playbook, to see what it was all about before purchasing. After that chat, I decided, “Nope, that method is not for me.” I had several objections that just couldn’t be overcome – I didn’t want to bother people by contacting them regularly, I didn’t think I needed a CRM, and I felt that I’d rather audition on pay to plays vs direct market because, after all, pay to plays are what helped build my business 15+ years ago.
Fast forward, and, here I am, a Playbook subscriber. I couldn’t be happier about it! The pay to play landscape has definitely changed, so my strategy needed to change. Upon realizing that, over the past couple of years, I’ve made some wonderful connections by direct marketing. I’ve found I really enjoy networking and learning about people! I purchased Playbook in order to sharpen and learn about how to improve my direct marketing, and I can attest, it’s worth every penny. If you’re hesitant to purchase, don’t be. I was the toughest person to convince, and, I can tell you, it’s worth it.

What Does a Recording Studio Look Like?

July 10, 2024 by Caryn Clark

What does a recording studio look like? 🎤🎧

Well, they come in all shapes and sizes, of course! Closets, vocal booths, rooms… you name it. I started in a closet, then moved on to treating a room.

I’ve had MANY a studio, and have built them all myself (with help and advice from friends, of course).  Personally, I’m not a big fan of a vocal booth. I’ve used them, and the sound is not always as perfect as you might think.

Here’s a little tour of my studio. 📹 I prefer the luxury of an entire room with gorgeous natural sunlight ☀️beaming in. (Keep in mind I started this video in the hallway and didn’t close the door behind me so you hear the doggies, garage door, echo, you name it!)

We just had new floors installed this weekend. Along with new flooring, a lot of cleaning and organizing happened, and a little walk down memory lane is included in my tour. 🤗 A nice reminder of just a couple of the cool projects I’ve had the opportunity to help with over the years.

Lol 😂 my husband greeting our dogs at the end.

I am a bit of an “audio purist,” as I like to call it. I only use my mic (Sennheiser 416), a Universal Audio Volt interface, and ProTools. I do have RX tools, and I use Voice De-Noise every so often, but that’s it. No fancy filtering, compression, etc for this gal!

If you need help with building out your recording studio, or just have some questions, I know a few people you can consult with! Schedule an appointment with me here.

Overcome the “I Don’t Wanna” Brat!

June 19, 2024 by Caryn Clark

This is me. Kicking myself.

Why?

Because I should’ve started using a CRM (CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management, and a CRM is a tool/database that helps you keep track of your customers and potential customers) a long time ago.

I was a brat, and “diiiidddddnnnn’t wwwwaaaannnnnaaaa!!!”

I remember having a consult with Marc Scott, oh, about three years ago, I guess, and literally said to him, “Yeah, that’s not for me.”

At the time, I was killing it on the pay to play voice casting web sites. Plus, the thought of cold emailing people made me cringe.

It still does. I do not want to be that annoying vo talent.

But, the pay to play voice casting web sites are not working very well for many talent these days. (PS: If you are a #creativedirector and cast #voiceover via a casting web site, I’d recommend you look at other avenues, b/c they’re not doing talent any favors, just taking loads of our money. I’m hoping that tide will turn, but until then…)

I’m in the initial baby steps of using a CRM, just sending emails right now to select people. It’s not as bad as I thought it’d be. The key is creating emails that aren’t the same as what everyone else would send… be unique! I like to take the honest approach, myself.

I sent 20 emails the other day, and received one reply that there might be a job for me next week.

That’s success right there!

So glad I’m doing this!

Get on it. Put the brat in timeout and do what you gotta do to build your business. Everyone’s doing it, why shouldn’t you?

Be In YES Mode!

February 8, 2024 by Caryn Clark

Earlier this year, I was watching a MasterClass with Amy Poehler about improvisation and how it relates to living life.

One of the rules of improv is, “Yes, and…” When your improv partner makes a statement, the way for you to add to the story to move it along is to say YES, and then add a thought, idea, or situation they can react to. If you lead in with a no or negative statement, it’s likely the ability to improv is going to nosedive soon. It’s challenging to respond to a negative idea in a positive way that keeps it moving forward. By saying yes to the continuation of the story, you’re agreeing to collaborate and build on the story that’s forming.

Read that again.

By saying yes, you’re agreeing to collaborate on the story that’s forming. The converse is, by saying no, you’re not agreeing to collaborate, or grow the story.

The story = your life/business.

Be willing to say YES to everything that comes your way! Be adventurous and willing, even if it’s scary or intimidating. Take chances! The only way we learn and grow is by saying YES and getting out of our comfort zone to try new things.

Make it a point to walk through each day with a “I’m gonna say YES!” attitude, and just watch what comes your way to explore! Being in this mindset helps you to keep your eyes open to the possibilities.

An Example of Saying Yes
A friend texted me about participating in a local elementary school’s “Read Across America” week, asking if I was interested in reading stories to the kids. At first glance, I’ll be honest and tell you, I can find many reasons to say, “Oh thanks for thinking of me, but I’m really busy.” Here are a couple: I spent a lot of time helping with PTA and other organizations when my stepdaughter was younger, and I’m very happy to have my time back to focus on my business. Another objection I could’ve had is that little kids are like petri dishes of bacteria, and the last thing I need as a voice over is to get sick.

See where I’m going? It’s easy to object.

Instead, I thought to myself, “How fun would this be to do for an hour, and see cute little humans enjoy being read to?” It’ll be nice to get out of the studio for a couple of hours, be  helpful to others, and make a difference in a child’s life. So, when I received the text, I immediately said, “YES, I’d love to help with this!”

Sometimes, all people need is an invitation, and they’re happy to help, and say YES. Don’t be afraid to ask people to participate and collaborate.

Take some time to think of the many ways you might have said NO to past opportunities, and think about what you can say YES to going forward.

Note:
Say YES within reason. Use your judgment about saying yes to something that compromises your ethics or morals.

Are You Listening?

January 10, 2024 by Caryn Clark

Are You Listening?
https://www.carynclark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/VORadio_EpisodeListening_CarynClark.mp3

If you were anywhere on social media this past holiday season, you were probably pummeled with ads for #MasterClass.

I’d always been intrigued by MasterClass but I just wasn’t sure I’d use it.

After seeing ad after ad on #Facebook with #MarthaStewart in hair rollers, drinking her green juice, and letting us know she “… started her first business at the age of 50…” I just couldn’t resist any longer.

I subscribed to MasterClass.

I don’t regret it one single bit. It’s probably hands down the best $100+ I’ve ever spent, and I’m saying this only after having it a week.

First I watched the Martha Stewart MasterClass, and am so completely in awe of her confidence. She has built empire upon empire, and lost a few, too. She does everything with grace and confidence,  both the wins and the losses.

Next up, I watched a MasterClass by Goodby Silverstein and Partners, founders Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein. Holy smokes, y’all. Anyone in any facet of the advertising industry needs to watch this one. It is chock full of their experienced insight. They are amazing complements to one another – it’s no wonder they’re good business partners. I will likely watch this one again, for sure.

The most recent class I watched is Amy Poehler’s Prepared to be Unprepared. It’s about improvisational skills, but how they relate to leading a fulfilling life. So, it’s both applicable to acting, and life in general. It is so incredible and a little mind twisty to think about improv prompts and how they apply to life. It’s true though, they do.

A theme I found in all of these classes, that each teacher mentioned, was LISTENING. Jeff Goodby, Martha Stewart, and Amy Poehler – they all emphasized LISTENING to your client, the people in your life, your employees.

Listening is so very important in order to be respected, and for success in life and career.

It really gave me pause to consider, do I listen well? Do I listen enough? Do I listen to my clients’ needs? Are the advertisements we voice listening to the people they’re being created for? In improv, for example, listening is vital. We have to listen to follow along to what our fellow actors are saying, so we can help to create the story to keep it going.

Trust is an important part of business, and of relationships, both client relationships and audience relationships, in the realm of advertising. We have to gain the audience’s trust in a mere :30 seconds, for them to understand that the solution we’re presenting is the solution for them… THE one they NEED.

Trust is built by listening.

It shows you care. You respect them. You understand them.

When you build trust, you build loyalty. You build loyalty, you have a customer for life.

Next time you’re in a conversation with a friend or colleague, focus on being a good listener. Don’t interrupt (make notes if you have to remember what you want to say), don’t interject your ideas or thoughts about what you think they should do, but rather, think about what the person is saying, and truly relate to what they’re telling you. See how you can solve their problem, or maybe you can’t, and they just need you to listen.

So Important, Yet, Often Overlooked

September 21, 2023 by Caryn Clark

Not all businesses advertise on radio or TV, especially local businesses. They might not create web videos, or need promotional voice over work on podcasts. These types of marketing/advertising can be costly, and it can often take time to see the ROI.
BUT THERE IS ONE THING ALL BUSINESSES HAVE and should use to portray their happy and friendly image to their potential and current customers.
Their phone!! Everyone’s phone has voicemail, and many businesses utilize a phone tree menu, along with marketing messages for when people are on hold.
If someone is calling your business, it’s because they’re interested in doing business with you in some way…. oorrrrrr maaayyyybbbeee they’re a bill collector… sorry, I can’t help with that! 😉 LOL. The voice who answers the call is the FIRST THING your potential and current clients hear to get to know you and your business personality and brand. This voice is THE REPRESENTATION of your business’s brand. It sets the tone for the business’s image and the relationship they’ll have with the client going forward. Think Monorail system at Disney Parks – iconic, right? Your business brand should be iconic, too!
The phone message of any business is the most important piece of marketing representation a business has, and it’s probably the least expensive and quickest marketing to implement! So let’s do it!
Smile and welcome your customers and clients through the phone! From assistance with writing, production, and voice over (both male and female voices), my team can produce phone messaging that represents you and your business. Give me a call at 239-634-5039 if you’d like to chat about how I can help you!
